Acronyms and Abbreviation
I was having a chat with a friend of mine who was explaining his understanding of the difference between acronyms and abbreviations. We differed in our understandings, but the Chicago Manual of Style gave us a third point of view - I like it. I’m not sure that I’ll use the term “initialism” in regular conversation, but I appreciate the distinction they are making…
Abbreviations
Q. I had always understood the term acronym to mean an abbreviation that spells a word, such as snafu (per Webster’s), but in your manual [the fourteenth edition, 1993] the two terms are used interchangeably. Can you tell me where you get your definition of acronym?
A. Since 1993, we’ve realized that we needed to be more precise. In the fifteenth edition, therefore, we distinguish between acronyms, initialisms, and contractions, all under the umbrella of abbreviation, as follows: acronym refers only to terms based on the initial letters of their various elements and read as single words (NATO, AIDS); initialism to terms read as a series of letters (BBC, ATM); and contraction to abbreviations that include the first and last letters of the full word (Mr., amt.). These distinctions can also be found in the multivolume work Acronyms, Initialisms, and Abbreviations Dictionary, edited by Mary Rose Bonk and published in its twenty-seventh edition in 2000 by Gale Research Incorporated.
Perfect Evening Weather
I was the perfect North Carolina evening. I just spent the last 2 hours on my porch, catching up on some email. The weather was that kind that feels like its not there at all.

Just found out about Name Mangler from a friend last night. Its a super useful and super easy utility for mass renaming of files. From the site

Writing for the (4-3) majority opinion in the California supreme court decision on same-sex marriage, Chief Justice Ronald M. George had this to say
“Although the understanding of marriage as limited to a union of a man and a woman is undeniably the predominant one, if we have learned anything from the significant evolution in the prevailing societal views and official policies toward members of minority races and toward women over the past half-century, it is that even the most familiar and generally accepted of social practices and traditions often mask an unfairness and inequality that frequently is not recognized or appreciated by those not directly harmed by those practices or traditions.”
