Cutting the cable

After a wonderful Pad Thai at Martha’s house tonight, we made a pact. No more fancy cable. We’re both calling Time-Warner tomorrow and cutting down to the most basic cable, and that is just for reception. Corey and I are looking into some of the elgato products as a means for possibly avoiding cable entirely!

It’s kind of scary — I grew up with a television on almost all the time. We all figured that there is so much media out there, and we can watch movies and TV shows via iTunes and AppleTV, so who needs to let Time Warner molest us?

It’s also really exciting — I’d been watching too much TV anyway.

I suspect this is going to work out quite well :-)

David and I canceled Dish Network about a year ago and have been watching, over the air HD, and shows that are available on the internet. There’s loads to watch. You’ll have no trouble at all.

What kind of antenna do you use? Can you recommend one?

JB and I only have basic cable and I can say that we rarely ever watch tv. I have my fav. shows like Lost and ANTM but unless I’m home, I’ll just rewatch them online. We do usually watch the news at night and the late-nights talk shows but that’s about it. Prime-time tv shows have just gone to pot. I say just wait til your fav. showtime or hbo show comes out on dvd and get caught up then. i hear ya!

OK…I like TV way too much for that drastic a measure…but I did just pair my channels down to only those stations I watch.

Hey…I’m just reading this blog now. How’s the no-cable thing going? I will say that I got rid of cable altogether in October and have not regretted it at all. I’m saving a ton of money, reading ..well, more…and if I really need TV that bad I can usually watch it the next day.

I hope you are enjoying your cable - free life!

It’s been going really well. I’ve been watching much less television, and saving so much money! :-)
